 Exhumation at Teignmouth

At the Teignmouth Cemetery early on Monday morning, an unusual occurrence was witnessed, the body of a young lady being exhumed in the Roman Catholic section of the ground in the presence of Rev. Father Dawson, Mr W.R. Hall Jordan (Clerk to the Burial Board), Mr J. Drake (representing Dr F.C.H. Piggott, Medical Officer of Health), and Mr C.F. Gettings (Surveyor to the Burial Board.)

About twelve months since, a French family, named Mons, and Mdme Torteau, came from Noronde. Their daughter, Anne Celestine Marie, aged 20, was taken ill and died. The interment took place at the Cemetery and a simple wooden cross marked the grave, and on the cross was inscribed:- "I ci repose Marie Torteau, nee Neronde, France, 9 Juin, 1887. Decedee a Teignmouth le 9 Aout, 1908. Pries Dieu Pourelle."

Upon the body being brought to the surface, portions of the Roman Catholic service were read by the Rev. Father Dawson. The body was placed in a lead-lined polished oak casket, with a cross extending the whole length, soldered down, and then sealed in the presence of Mons Spake (French Consul) and Mons and Mdme Torteau.

The remains were then taken to the railway station and conveyed by the 10.50 am train to Dover, whence they were transferred to steamer for France, to be interred in the Neronde Valley. The local arrangements were carried out by Messrs W.J. Coleridge and Son, Station Road.
